ROANOKE (July 6, 2006)– For the first time since 2001,
NASCAR golf is returning to Rockingham County. On Wednesday, July 19,
2006, at 1:00 p.m. The Bobby Scruggs Memorial Foundation will hold The Captain’s
Choice Tournament at the Monroeton Golf Course, prior to the Busch Series race
at Martinsville Speedway.
The event will consist of a luncheon at
11:30 a.m. provided by the Women of the Eden Moose Lodge, tee-off at 1:00 p.m.,
and a silent auction. The Busch Series regulars and form drivers who have
expressed an interest in participating include: Stacy Compton, Ashton Lewis,
Regan Smith, Randy LaJoie, David Green and his brother Mark Green, Jason Keller,
Tim Fedewa and Mike Dillon of Richard Childress Racing, and Crew Chiefs Brian
Pattie and Ricky Person. Several car owners such as Chip Ganassi, Tad
Geschickter and Joe Gibbs said they hope to send one or more teams of crew
members with some drivers possibly being among these teams.
Bobby Scruggs served 38 years as a NASCAR official and was
the founder and owner of Racing Image in Roanoke. Bobby passed away on
January 22, 2005, after a thirteen year battle with cancer, but he “Never Gave
Up” and he truly appreciated the support of the NASCAR family throughout his
fight. This event is to honor Bobby’s longtime dedication to the sport of
motor racing and to raise scholarship funds for young men and women who are
pursuing a career in motorsports, as well as for cancer research and prevention
and other programs that were of interest to him.
Only 30
teams will be available for this inaugural event. Registration is $50 for
individuals and $200 for teams. Hole sponsorships also are available at
$250 which includes a free player and a sign for the company on their respective
hole. Registration forms can be obtained at Monroeton Golf Course, by
