CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Mar. 24, 2006) – In a unanimous vote yesterday in Nashville,
the Tennessee General Assembly granted a proclamation proclaiming May 19, 2006
as NASCAR Day in the state of Tennessee. This decision makes Tennessee the first
state with 100% participation at the state government level.
Governor Phil
Bredesen, the house and senate passed Senate Joint Resolution 622 (NASCAR
DAY proclamation) during the General Assembly on Thursday. All 132 Tennessee
lawmakers received their NASCAR Day pins, during State Senator Mike Williams
(R-Maynardville) presentation of SJR 622 (NASCAR Day
proclamation).
“The state of Tennessee has
been wonderful to work with, and have been great supporters of not only NASCAR,
but The NASCAR Foundation and our charitable initiatives”, said Sandy Marshall,
executive director of The NASCAR Foundation. “Senator Mike Williams has been
instrumental in making this proclamation happen, further solidifying the state’s
dedication to the sport and its initiatives.”
Last year, 25 states granted
proclamations declaring NASCAR Day 2005 in their states. So far this year, there
are 11 states on board having already granted proclamations declaring May 19 as
NASCAR Day.
NASCAR Day, in its third year, is an annual
celebration of the NASCAR spirit. Each year the program grows as more companies
and NASCAR fans become involved. Last year, more than 240,000 pins were sold,
and more than 2,500 companies participated in NASCAR Day. For a five dollar
donation, participants receive an official commemorative NASCAR Day lapel pin
and are encouraged to wear them on May 19 to show their NASCAR pride and
celebrate NASCAR Day. The proceeds benefit The NASCAR Foundation which supports
more than 25 motorsports industry and driver charities including the Victory
Junction Gang Camp, Speediatrics and Speedway Children’s Charities. To find out
